Board Service Opportunity
Founded in 1989, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is the trusted, independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit certification body for the energy performance of windows, doors, and skylights. NFRC is the standard-bearer in fenestration performance certification and exists to provide the public with objective data that helps stakeholders make informed decisions about product and building performance. NFRC certification ensures that products are tested using precise, scientifically validated methods, resulting in ratings that are fair, accurate and credible. More than 800 companies rate and certify their products with NFRC and countless volunteers participate in the development of NFRC standards.
How We Operate
NFRC is a mid-size non-profit with a staff of highly skilled professionals whose expertise includes engineering, materials testing, quality assurance, code development, non-profit management, marketing, finance, fenestration product ratings, certification program management, data, and technology. All NFRC programs and operations are overseen by our CEO, who interfaces regularly with our Board of Directors, which is the governing body of the NFRC.
Our Board is responsible for providing strategic oversight, guidance, and support for the organization. NFRC’s Bylaws allow for 15 voting directors and several at-large positions. Our Board is comprised of industry specialists, architects, academics, and those from complementary industries such as building codes, consumer advocacy, and energy efficiency. Having such a diverse group of individuals on the Board is important to NFRC and allows different perspectives to be considered when making decisions on behalf of the organization. As the organization evolves so does our Board. The Board of Directors is a self-perpetuating body that is constantly seeking others who may be interested in joining our ranks.

What’s expected of you?
Serving on a board of directors can be fulfilling work. The core elements of service on the NFRC Board are like that of other non-profit boards:
- Provide strategic direction and oversight of the organization. This includes the development of NFRC mission and vision, as well as short- and long-term strategic goals and objectives.
- Work closely with the CEO to ensure the effective implementation of the strategic plan and guide NFRC’s growth in the face of challenges and evolving market trends.
- Monitor the performance of the organization.
- Work in the best interest of NFRC by helping to advance the mission by building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, government agencies, and allied organizations.
Time Commitment
A board member is appointed to 2 successive three-year terms. Attendance at Board meetings is expected for all board members. The NFRC Board of Directors meets 6-8 times per year (3 in person and 5 virtually). Also, every voting member of the board must serve on at least one board committee. Committee meetings are held 2-5 times per year depending on the committee. These meetings are held virtually and generally last 1 hour. Board members can submit travel and lodging expenses to NFRC should they wish.
