Fair. Accurate. Credible.

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is the trusted, independent, nonprofit certification body for the energy performance of windows, doors, and skylights. NFRC certification ensures that products are tested using precise, scientifically validated methods, resulting in ratings that are fair, accurate and credible.

If it doesn't have the label, it isn't NFRC certified.

With more than 35 years of expertise, NFRC is the standard-bearer in fenestration performance certification, providing the public with objective data that helps stakeholders make informed decisions about product and building performance. NFRC certification ensures that products are tested using precise, scientifically validated methods, resulting in ratings that are fair, accurate and credible.

What does the NFRC label tell you?

The NFRC label helps you compare between energy-efficient windows, doors, and skylights by providing you with energy performance ratings in multiple categories.

U-Factor
U-Factor measures how well a product keeps heat from escaping a room. The lower the number, the better it is at keeping heat in.
Range: 0.20-1.20

Visible Transmittance
Visible Transmittance measures how well a product lights your home with daylight. The higher the number, the more natural light is let in.
Range: 0-1

Condensation Resistance

This measures a product’s resistance to condensation. The higher the number, the better a product resists condensation.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures a how much solar heat a product allows in. Low numbers resist solar heat, high numbers allow solar heat.
Range: 0-1

Air Leakage
Air Leakage measures how much air will enter a room through a product. The lower the number, the fewer drafts you’ll experience.
Range:  ≤ 0.3
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)

This measures how well a product can resist unwanted direct or indirect solar radiation. In summer months, a low solar heat gain coefficient helps to keep your home cool. In winter months, a higher solar hear gain coefficient can help to keep your home warm.

NFRC door label

The circled value above shows you the rating a specific door has received based on its glass configuration. Each rating is split into two values: Solar Heat Gain, and U-Factor.
U-Factor

U-Factor measures how well a product can keep heat from escaping from the inside of a room. The lower the number, the better a product is at keeping heat in.

Range: 0.00-2.00

Label Certificates are used in commercial buildings and are project-specific. They include the address and contact information for the project as well as the certified ratings.

NFRC and ENERGY STAR

NFRC is the official certification body for ENERGY STAR® windows, doors, and skylights. NFRC provides objective 3rd-party ratings for energy performance. Products that meet the ENERGY STAR performance requirements qualify for ENERGY STAR certification through NFRC.
