NFRC
Receives U.S. State Department Grant to Conduct International
Work
NFRC
among nine recipients chosen under Asia-Pacific Partnership
GREENBELT,
Md. – September 26, 2008
– Earlier this month, the National Fenestration Rating Council
(NFRC) received a grant from the U.S State Department to
implement clean energy work in China under the Asia-Pacific
Partnership's (APP) Clean Development and Climate program.
NFRC
was one of nine grant recipients chosen from a field of
more than 90 submittals. Paula Dobriansky, Under Secretary
of State for Democracy and Global Affairs for the Asia-Pacific
Partnership (APP) on Clean Development and Climate, announced
the award recipients at the U.S.-China-Australia Dialogue
on Energy Security and Climate Change in Washington , D.C.
"We
are deeply committed to the APP's goal of reducing building
energy consumption and look forward to concentrating our
efforts with the other team members," said Jim Benney,
NFRC's Executive Director. "It's an honor to be chosen
from such a strong field of competitors who submitted many
innovative ideas."
The
APP brings together both government entities and private
industry sectors of Australia , Canada , China , India ,
Japan , the Republic of Korea , and the United States with
the goal of advancing clean energy technologies.
NFRC
will work with three Chinese building energy organizations
and three American entities to develop a building certification
program enabling reduced building energy consumption. The
award is for $250,000 through June 2010 and requires all
partners to contribute matching funds. NFRC and its partners
estimate that 59 terawatt-hours per year (TWh/year) could
be saved upon full implementation of their building certification
program. That's enough annual energy to power seven million
Chinese homes.
"Climate
change is a global issue and in order to effectively reduce
building energy consumption worldwide, the international
community will have to work together," added Benney.
